# Jurisdictions and Categories

> List the jurisdictions your account covers and the policy categories you can filter by.

## Jurisdictions

Jurisdictions represent the countries, states, counties, and cities PolicyMate monitors. The `GET /jurisdictions` endpoint returns every jurisdiction your account may access, which is handy for building filters without guessing identifiers:

## Categories

Categories organise bills and documents by policy area, from broad areas such as energy policy down to specific subjects. Categories form a tree, which you may retrieve using the `GET /categories` endpoint:

You may filter bills and documents by category using the `category` query parameter. Filtering by a parent category includes all of its children.
